How to Replace a Clock Spring (airbag light & horn not working)

Datum objavljivanja: 10. Stu 2019.
Learn how to turn off your airbag light and fix a horn that doesn't work by replacing your clock spring. Replacing a clock spring is very simple, saves us over $600 and takes less than an hour. I will show you how to safely remove the airbag and steering wheel so you can replace the clockspring at home using common hand tools.
To figure out I had a bad clock spring, I used an obd2 scanner to scan the airbag light and got codes b1801 and b1811 which is an open squib circuit, which means the clock spring is bad. Another way to tell the clock spring is bad is the horn doesn't work and/or the steering wheel buttons don't work.

  • It's funny how your voice sounded 6 years ago

  • Simply the best!!! Thanks man. Thanks.

  • BEAUTIFUL / EXCELLENT / NICE job CF! Kudos and MANY THANKS indeed. I might do this myself after all: '94 Buick Regal which, two or three years ago started honking steadily during the wee hours of the a.m. (neighbor's delight). Then it began honking, steadily, while driving! Embarrassing, people around me actually moved over ... or thought I was under a bad road rage episode and shook their head while I shyly passed them by. You, young man / mechanic, are awesome.

  • Hi. my 13 GT had The Advance Track needs service light come on and also had no power steering. I was told by auto repair shop the code reader said it was a Ford Steering Wheel Position Sensor. • Hgdasfygggn

  • nice job, best car repair videos on youtube!

  • My horn wasn't working and I had an airbag light and it turned out to be both the clockspring and the horn. Also you can pull the codes by jumping the obd2 plug and getting it to cycle through the codes by flashing the ABS light... each car has a different way of doing this.

  • Answerrr meeee Chris

  • Pooping on the floor Chris fix Pooping on the back of your car 🚙

  • Pooping on the floor

  • Thanks!

  • I always

  • is that a horn cable or a ground cable???

  • I'd like to recommend you that it'd be better and safer to pull the orange safety tab from the clock spring after you reinstall the steering wheel, so it wouldn't be a headache to line it straight

  • 15:10 the combination of threadlocker (or anti-seize) with a torque wrench is a bad idea; because both provide some initial lubricant, you end up with a higher compression than what the same torque would have applied to dry parts

  • Why you mark there while most cars are marked there already for you? Your clock spring no need of re- centred?

  • excellent very detailed easy to understand video. safety hints & tips esp. let the caps drain, appreciated. subscribed!

  • 7:39 Is it okay if my airbag inflator is a little more rusty than yours? It doesn't seem to be part of any current recalls.

  • It worked!!! Thanks man truly a blessing to have your help! Have a great 2021.

  • Hey Chris thanks for the info, this video was very helpfull, I AM from Ecuador, Do You know if this obd tool works for a Skoda Fabia?

  • @ChrisFix I have a 2015 Prius and my horn keeps going off at random times. Would you recommend replacing the clock spring? My airbag light isn’t on. Everything else is working fine. The horn is just randomly honking really loud.

  • Would the clock spring also be the reason for a horn that is stuck in the on position?

  • I have 2003 toyota sequoia limited, clock spring was bad, I replaced it. Airbag light gone.. but horn still not working.

  • Hello, My 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 was involved in an accident. Airbag got deployed . I have changed the airbag and front seat belts. But, still have the airbag light on ! Do you know what else do I need to change? please let me know if I could use your help with this problem. Thanks a lot in advance

  • what a wonderful video you saved me from detailers scam. thank you chris

  • Memories that Chrisfix cut out the old leather and recovered the whole steering wheel the leather or the edge is all crack and faded and use the steering wheel puller and now Chrisfix has access to the clock spring 10:00

  • You're a legend Chris !

  • Chris is the best mechanic on HRdown

  • I’m happy that they designed the steering wheel so @chrisfix doesn’t used steering wheel puller

  • Sorry if it's been asked before, but do you remember if the old clockspring was OEM or aftermarket? Thanks.

    • no

  • Our van doesn't have a clock spring, it just has a metal plate and some wires also if you turn the steering wheel to lock the horn does not work.

  • my audio controls on my steering wheel dont work, possibly the clock spring? could affect it?

    • Thanks for the video idea!

  • How can I trust that is it working? Show us!

  • Is the 20$ clock spring safe??? I need to change mine one my 2005 Toyota Mattrix, but wtf is that price range, from 300$ to 20$ ??!! I asked my dealership and he said he would not trust the 20$ China one... is it like a big Toyota scam or is it really dangerous, cheap security 20$ part that will make my airbag explode in my face at any moment??

  • 10:00 Only veteran viewers will know that clip is old

  • Nice to see youchris

  • Ughhhh I’m so scareddddd 😂

  • What brand is the obd2 reader?

  • GOOD!

  • All the dislikes are from the mechanics and dealers

  • I actually watched all of your videos a while ago and when my horn stopped working and heard a lot of snapping of wires when turning the steering wheel I new exactly what it was. Thanks for what you do.

  • Great thank u

  • rip my nissan tiida horn

  • ft-lbs?! That definitely said in-lbs. Where did you see ft-lbs? Also, my Nissan has an airbag light on, and the horn no longer beeps when we lock it from outside with the key fob. Could that be an indication of a failing clock spring?

  • You saved my life!

  • Would this cause my turn signals to turn on only sometimes? They work when I turn the hazards on

  • Really superb bro...I'm a first timer and I've learned a lot..thanks👍

    • I'm glad you learned a lot from the video! Thanks a lot!

  • Why broken clock spring

  • The clock spring is called abs

  • very good video, would that work with a 2009 nissan sentra? I have watched many videos before but never detailed like yours. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    • Thanks a lot! I've done this on a bunch of different cars and this wouldn't be much different than your Nissan!

  • Chris, bro you are my auto mechanic hero !!

  • Is the after market clock spring universal?

    • @ChrisFix will it fit on miata mx5 2017? I tried putting a quick release and I didn’t know you’re not supposed to spin the clock spring :(

    • They might the same one on a lot of cars but you'll have check fitment!

  • Chrisfix: hey guys, chrisfix here. Problems with your airbag? First thing you need to do is to disconnect the battery Me: disconnects the battery but pulls airbag and brings it In house and airbag deploys and house destroys because of airbag.

  • How many times he said NUT👉🏽
